Reviews & Discussion

I'm not generally a fan of indie rock, college rock, garage rock or, indeed, any form of rock. This band and, in particular, this album remain an exception to that general principle. The production values are extremely high - tight and varied percussion shimmers clearly over funky disco-rock, yes that's right disco-rock.

Although only 2 tracks are attributed as being Maurice Fulton remixes, I am sure that his influence can be found in other parts of the album - the best trach (IMHO), Hello? Is This Thing On?, has an electro-disco stab in the intro that only Maurice Fulton seems capable of producing, elsewhere snares, hi-hats and kick drums co-ordinate in perfect synchronicity to build energy before the bass and guitar kick in to great effect - very Maurice Fulton, very nice!

I have to confess, when I first got this album I skipped through it quickly, thought very little of it and forgot about it. Then after picking up a couple of the singles for the remixes I returned to it to do it justice. And I'm very glad I did. I firmly believe it's one of the best albums of 2004. It's fresh, original and raw sounding.
It's got a distinct sound to it which sounds to me a bit like Echo and the Bunnymen having a fight with Duran Duran whilst taking a truck of load funky pills and updating their sounds for the '00s. Its bass guitar and live drumkit led, with plenty of assorted funk - congas, sax, spanish guitar for example, thrown in for good measure with seriosuly cool vocals.
I really recommend you check this out if you like your music with a bit of edge and attitude.
