Reviews & Discussion

Review by scoundrel Oct 26, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
TALKIE WALKIE sees a welcome return to form for Air, much closer in spirit to MOON SAFARI than 10,000 HZ LEGEND. "Venus," for instance, has that beautiful, drifting quality that made MOON SAFARI a classic. "Cherry Blossom Girl" continues that trend, as does "Universal Traveler" and the instrumental "Mike Mills." And despite the odd syllablization on "Universal Traveler," the vocals on TALKIE WALKIE are passable (although I do miss guest vocalists such as Beth Hirsch.) "Alpha Beta Gaga" leans more towards the prog-rock that unfortunately weighed down 10,000 HZ LEGEND, but it's sufficiently buoyed by its whistling melody. "Alone In Kyoto" ends the album on a gorgeous, almost ambient, note. Air has done plenty of soundtrack work and that attention towards mood shows here. Let's hope they continue to grow in the right direction.

Air, after a few diversions into electronic corners, return to the source of their best material.
Talkie Walkie is indeed their finest album in years and is a welcome return to the style that made "Moon Safari" what it is, a classic in it's own right, an album which has now spent over 200 weeks inside the UK albums chart.
Being quite amazingly surprised by the quality of this recording let's hope that albums like this will keep coming in the forthcoming years.
Wonderful!
