The whole story, which in fact isn’t that important, is being told by one of the boys who are vaguely friends with the girls. And that’s the beauty of “The Virgin Suicides”. To the boys, the Lisbon girls are a mystery, a fascination, an obsession. No one understands them, neither do we, the audience. Cause of this perspective there’s always a 'gap' between the audience and the teenage girls.
That’s what makes the music from 'The Virgin Suicides' really beautiful. If one band manages to put together instrumental harmonies with well-placed and well-played synths, from time to time adding lyrics as well, it is Air.
'The Virgin Suicides' is the band's best release in my opinion! The main theme is repeated exactly on the spots of the CD where you long to hear it again. Beautifully introduced with 'Playground Love’and ending in the somber 'Suicide Underground' which will bring back memories to those who have seen this poetically sad film.
If you like the movie – like I do – this CD is more than a soundtrack. Sofia Copolla definitely knew which band she had to choose to express the poetry and sad story of the Lisbon girls.
The only critic that I have is that some of the tracks are way to short, but nevertheless, a timeless masterpiece
