The Cycle is a teaser MCD from Dresden based Absurd Minds. As the precursor to their upcoming full length, this MCD contains 5 new tracks, 5 remixes, and one cover song, which is where I shall begin. Although musically simplistic, Nine Inch Nails’ Hurt was a great piece at its time, but after already having a successful revival with Johnny Cash’s cover, I really saw no need for yet another version. Absurd Minds pull it off without a hitch, showing a slower, more emotional side to the band. Primarily vocal driven, this cover is a non-aggressive, slow moving piece. Now…onto the better stuff. The Cycle, I Feel Alive, and Obituary are just what I wanted to hear from Absurd Minds. Jumpy synths, firm dance beats, and Stefan’s, near Peter Spilles (Project Pitchfork) sounding, distinct vocals. Watching Over You is a leisurely paced electro piece with rolling beats and dark, echoing vocals. The Bootstrap mix of The Cycle, beefs up the original with added synths and a stronger rhythm. The three other remixes of The Cycle don’t ever really reach the same pinnacle as the original. For the most part, they are toned down, much slower reworkings. I was rather disappointed with these. The Jones-mix of I Feel Alive is just the opposite. This particular piece has a noise edge to it, which gives it a whole new feel. I almost enjoy this piece more than the original. Of the 11 tracks found within, I truly enjoyed the 5 originals, thought the cover was so-so, and only liked one of the remixes.
