Released initally as a benefit single to help tackle the AIDS crisis, this song took on another meaning after the horrific attacks on American soil on September 11, 2001. Profits were split to help out AIDS and 9/11 victims. The song is a cover of the Marvin Gaye classic with many artists helping out. A lot of different versions here to fit many styles. For the dance music purists, Junior Vasquez & Marc Kinchen were hired to remix the track. MK's mix is not featured here on the CD single. Here, JV doesn't break any new ground. Instead, he looks back to the early 90s for his remix - keeping the song at a fairly low BPM (120, to be exact) and injecting the track with keyboard riffs straight out of Black Box's "Everybody Everybody (Le Freak Mix)" to give the song a garage-house feel with a strong air of nostalgia. By the way, I almost cried when those keys come in the first time - whenever that happens to me, I know it's a powerful track. This, to me, was the right thing to do, given that this is a charity single. Many others might dismiss this as just another cash-in. But look at the bigger picture, folks; then try to give a dissenting opinion. I wonder if any DJs actually have played this mix sinve it eas first released. Well, they should - to keep alive hope for an AIDS cure and that everyone needs to do their part to bring the world together.....even if, for a little while, to have a good time. Marvin, no one knew how big a prophet you would become.
