The mysterious Moscow resident known as Ambidxetrous drifts into public view with this alluring debut effort on the purely Russian label Shaped Harmonics. There have been some interesting sounds coming out of the cold state of Russia. Projects like Fizzarum, Novel 23, and the remarkable EU, are beginning to draw attention as of late. Ambidextrous identity Nick Zavriev proves his worth, offering an intriguing album of mellow electronica and savory rhythmic idm. Intricate sound tinkering, marred with stammering rhythms and low bass synth tones immediately capture the listener's attention from the start with 'Antima'. Stuttering hiQs and drudging kicks lay the foundation for frequent spastic beats and bubbling synthesizers. Moments of tranquility appear when needed, smoothly merging the album's personalities and fluctuating moods. '6 Million Forms' quickly develops into a warm, light, hip hop beat underlining beautiful melodies and crafty rhythms akin to Bola's 'Soup'. At the 12-minute mark, you may find yourself reaching for a repeat. I just love this song. 'Visotopia' sets forth with rapidly jumping beats and soon emerges with lovely harmonies, fitting 303 riffs, sputtering bleeps, and a multitude of layered sounds. 'Black Glass' sneaks in, again trudging through thick 303 riffs and lumpy basslines while smacking hi hats and solemn strings weave intimately through the mix. A moment of atmospheric arpegiators greet the end of this opus, inviting in an echoing beat. 'Errorism' tends to veer away from the Autechre blueprint and instead renders its own personality by exhibiting an effort towards avoiding overly complex mixtures and popular expectations.
