Reviews & Discussion

Some dub hip-hop from the Ancient Astronauts on their debut, _We Are to Answer_. They have good command over moods: check out the antiquarian feel on “I Came Running” or the rhythmic bongo fury of “Dark Green Red.” For those wanting something less-than-Occidental, “Lost in Marrakesh” captures to spirit (if not necessarily the authenticity) of Morocco. The raps are refreshingly old-skool; it’d be a party with the Pharsyde on “Classic,” if it weren’t for the moody background. Raashan Ahmad gets a more upbeat melody with “Risin High.” Female vocalists get their turn too: there’s the melancholy R&B of “A Hole to Swallow Us,” with a restrained diva turn by Phat Old Mamas, or summery reggae with Bajka on “Surfing the Silvatide.” Hope these astronauts lands again soon.
