The Anton Zap EP is a masterful release of four minimal deep-tech pieces with the Detroit feel firmly in place. It is undoubtedly one of the best 12" records this reviewer has bought in years. It begins and ends as a contemplative journey starting with first track - the beautiful 'Captain Storm', which comes at you with a continual slow drone chord that swirls quietly in the background as the beats and bassline envelope together to complete the spell. 'Storm' fades out to progress onto the equally compelling shifting pulses, eq's and textures of the remaining three tunes, of which each have a unique character and gravity pull of their own. Vadim's vocals and the sample of 'we are living in a new reality' on 'Cold' help raise the musical tension and aesthetic even higher. The latter sample also allowing it, from this listener's perspective, to be a gentle reminder of the new times we live in. A world of depleting fossil energy supplies, a population of near 7 billion human beings, disrupted climate and ecological systems and a geopolitical paradigm that is a redundant ugly story of greed and spiritual displacement. Hence time for us to create something far better! This EP is a highly suggestive and beguiling work that operates on a principle of carefully placed and designed features. Utterly delightful and, indeed, as essential as a copy of 'Tago Mago'. Get ready for the perfect storm, Captain.
