This release is of a special historic value: from here braindance severs with ambient techno with no return. "On" really shows a new direction, one of the best from Aphex. "73-yips" is somewhat unique borrowing much from acid. Dark-atmosphered loopy "D-scape", with straightforward kick-only beat, turns into awesome "Xepha", a soundtrack to nightmare. Totally outstanding by the time!

Bought this EP for the great "On" track.
Its smooth and dreamy.
73-Yips is alot faster and harder.more acid/techno-ish.
D-scape takes a while before it actually begins...and it doesnt really get to a highest point, but its a very OK track.
Xepha is (to me) D-scape part 2..it uses quite the same ambient lines with a beat.
Overall a nice release, worth a 4/5.

This EP features some brilliant drum work and melody to create an absolutely beautiful, serene song. One of my favorite RDJ releases.

"On" may be the best track in my library of 5,000 songs. i can remember where i was the first time i listened to this track. from probably 100 listens it still sounds just as good. really something very special is in this release

D-Scape is personally my 'desert island track'. It has everything you could want in an experience of "visionary" audio. Haunting beauty. Weaving melody and endless layers & depth. Thunderous bass (that always catches you off guard). This track was the one that did it for me, opened my mind to the idea that electronic music could evoke the same kind of emotion as music produced by conventional / classical means. It leaves you wanting more, which is possibly the greatest quality of all.

The '28 Mix' to On sounds in no way like the original track it is supposed to be based on. This, and the fact that the name of the mix is '28' has given way to the assertion that this mix is actually the 28th track on Selected Ambient Works II that found its way onto this release instead. Of course this hasn't been confirmed by James himself but it would not be of any surprise.

This was the first piece of electronic vinyl i ever bought (i seen a clip for the video on a u.k show called "the chart show" when it was released.) Absolutely blew me away. Had never even payed the slightest bit of attention to electronic music til then (i was a death metal fan of all things :P ) THIS changed everything.

Remixes by Reload and Mu-Ziq are terrific! Good early electronic music.. Love it..
I think this release is unfortunately deleted long time ago, like the Ventolin Remixes..

NOTE: The UK promotional 12" ep for "On" comes in a white generic paper record jacket (with no picture sleeve), and features the following having been hand-written onto the record's label: "WAP 39 APHEX TWIN".

NOTE: The UK promotional 12" ep for "On" features the following call-numbers etched into its run-out grooves, on Side A: "WAP 39 A1", and on Side B: "WAP 39 B1". This is an important identifying factor in that both the UK test-pressing and commercial pressing for this release feature only "WAP 39 A" etched into Side A's run-out groove, but with nothing etched into Side B.

Classic Aphex reversal of the main drum loop (blinding braekbeat as usual). This is Aphex Twin for the masses though- far more accessible than a lot of his work.
