I never really understood the practice of releasing a single with two A-sides. Why not milk'em and release them as two separate titles with their own respective strong identity? Apoptygma take this practice even further beyond by releasing the aptly titled "Deep
Red Electronic Warfare Backdraft".
What you get here is quite a mixed bag. "Deep Red" lacks that sticky refrain quality to suck in any new fans, it is a shame it gets to open the disc. Second is "Electronic Warfare", a track which I would probably have even enjoyed if it was instrumental and had thrown the 'analogic warfare' out the door. They sampled a guy whose voice rings a little too close to Colin Powell, and the stupid lyrics certainly don't help either: "load your gun; electronic warfare!" Ehm... ok.
The only saving grace of this disc is that they put the classic "Backdraft" as the last track. "But hang on..." I hear you thinking, "...that one's already on the ol' album!" My thoughts exactly, so why you would bother shelling out for this release unless you are a manic collector is beyond me.
