The Gotan Project brought tango into the modern world (in a huge way), so it only makes sense to go back to one of the foremost practitioners, Astor Piazzolla, who merged the tango with classical techniques. Here, Piazzolla gets remixed from a bevy of nu-jazz luminaries. Swedish duo Koop take us to a swinging day at the beach with their version of "Vuelvo al Sur." Hi Perspective add some sultry Castillian female vocals to "El Tango" -- nothing's sexier than a woman whispering, "It's the living death... in the tango!" (though Osunlade adding vocals to "Milonga" doesn't add quite the same touch.) Zeb applies a soothing dub touch to "Prelude Fugut VMM," while those searching for deep and mellow can turn to 2 Banks of 4 with "Milonga del Angel" or Nuspirit Helsinki's haunting take of "Verano Porteno." Hip-hop and tango don't sit together comfortably, however, as Nickodemus & Osiris do their best with "Tanguedia III" (it didn't work with the hip-hop mixes of the Gotan Project either). But a house rhythm suits Fantasista's mix of "Resurreccion del Angel" perfectly -- the layering at the start sounds almost baroque. Piazzolla himself would have been proud.
