On Bean Me Up, Scotty!, the Baked Beans’ second album, the ambience is still a factor, though there’s a bit more consideration of the rhythmical elements as well. “Jim Bean,” for instance, has its lofty synths grounded by a steady ethnic beat, while “Human Bean” has an almost sweet sound to it, like something you’d hear in a nursery. Make sure the kids aren’t around to hear “The Unbearable Lightness of Bean,” though, since it’s considerably darker, like an African safari. Both “James Bean” and “Echo Bean” return to the lighter side, with more positive melodies (even though the latter is rather short). And the closing track, “Heinz Roth Has Bean Sad,” is a delicate and quiet track, skewing towards melancholy. A definite maturing of sound from their first album.
Wonderful ambient stuff. Has a strange and intense "desert" atmosphere, in my vision I see a burning sun, sand, dust, rocks, the desert, a caravan passing by in the distance. Some of the tracks even have a touch of an evil/dark sound. Listening to this album is a pleasure each and every time again.
