Black Sabbath ‎– Black Sabbath

Genre:
Style:
Year:
Notes:
The first studio album by Black Sabbath. The album was recorded in one 8 hour session. The original European version of the record featured the pre-album single "Evil Woman" as the first track on the B-side while the North American version featured the song "Wicked World" (the B-side to the "Evil Woman" single) as the lead track on the second side of the record. Some current CD versions of the album now feature both tracks.

The North American version also features more song titles than actual songs. These extra titles are often believed to refer to the intros of certain songs:
"Wasp" is believed to refer to the intro of "Behind The Wall Of Sleep"
"Bassically" refers to the bass solo that opens "N.I.B.".
"A Bit Of Finger" is believed to refer to the acoustic intro of "Sleeping Village".
North American versions also usually group "Wasp", "Behind The Wall Of Sleep", "Bassically", and "N.I.B." on one track and "Sleeping Village", "A Bit Of Finger" and "Warning" on another single track while European version separate all the tracks.

My copies sleeve reads 1871(-WS)denoting a second press but the vinyl itself reads WS1871 and is on the first press green Warner Bros. Label..anyone else have this combo? (Perhaps a replacement sleeve by previous owner?)Have also heard that the 'Burbank' Forest label used in the 2nd press is rarer than the green.

Dark, gloomy, depressive and somewhat other worldly. This isn't fast paced blazing metal. This is slower, heavy and more introspective.

Each early Sabbath album is a gem all right
What distinguish this one from the others, is Ozzy's voice
A deep dark singing, telling us stories of the past.
A weird and almost terrifying tone coming directly from a Mario Bava's movie theme.
Melt with raw guitars, slow basic rhythms and heavy bass playing.
Far from over-production and later megalomania.
A great bluesy band that plays voodoo and laugh with sorcery...
Nothing else, no apology here...no gothic shit.
Ozzy only wants to save us all.

Rated 5/5

A very nice LP replica for those who like digipacks and the feel of cardboard sleeves :-)

The beginning of an era, I guess. Where hard-rock up till here was pitting pathos and violence against each other, Black Sabbath introduced (not very convincingly yet) elements of evil and anti-christian symbolism. Although completely paling in comparison with what the end of the last century and the beginning of this one spawned in this direction, the band plunges into realms hitherto uncraved for with mixed results. Black Sabbath attempts to express the antipode of the spiritual quest as advocated by countless progressive bands, but has not yet the ability to musically convince. The music is simply not evil enough to effectuate its claim. That doesn't mean that some of the stylistic traits this LP inaugurates do not have their merits. Grinding guitars, emphasis on strictly unswinging rhythms and heavy textures prevail everywhere, quite a combination. With unmelodic and thus unmannered heavy rock Black Sabbath proves that the straight line sometimes holds more power than the ornament. And don't forget that being first is a feat in itself. A lot left to cultivate here, but ''the beginning of an era'' holds true.
