Sequel to "Paradise" and strongly inspired by the music of Cerrone, "Champs Elysées" takes it's name from the streets of Paris. The 'Champs Élysées Theme' is an instrumental track with strings, recently remixed by Jamie Lewis. It's a sort of reminiscing of Cerrone and Alec Costandinos, very active in the 1970's. Then 'I Feel For You' follows and could have led to a full vocal album, but the two next tracks are instrumentals. 'Striptease' was also the name of a track by Cerrone ('Brigade Mondaine' soundtrack), but I don't see any similarity. However, the track is excellent and among the best.
In general, the vocal tracks are annoying and mark a departure from "Paradise". "Freedom", "Darlin", "Got To Be Free" and "Life" are either boring or very average. These themes (love, liberty, etc.) were used in dance music for over three decades, so there's nothing new in the conceptual aspect of these songs.
"Save Our Soul" and "Ich Rocke" were released in Europe and are both very good House tracks. I don't know if I'm going too far, but I feel "Ich Rocke" was deliberately inspired by "Spaced Out" (Play Paul) (concept of video games - see the video of 'Ich Rocke') and by the DJ Falcon remix of 'La Mouche' by Cassius (similar bassline).
Globally, "Champs Elysées" is like the end of the beginning (or the beginning of the end): further albums contains more vocals and deliberately embraced the commercial side of dance music. I personally prefer "Paradise" to "Champs Elysées", but I'm not discrediting this opus entirely, as it contains some good tracks.
Officially, there is only 1 sample used on the whole album, but I'm not sure it's the truth. Here and there, there are some pops & scratches (clearly audible at the beginning of 'You Are Beautiful' and on "Striptease"). The cymbal on "Got To Be Free" and "Save Our Soul" was clearly taken from "Rise" by Eddie Amador... so if there are some more, let's say their origin and use is more subtle.
In general, the remix CD contains remixes that are available on the Maxi-Singles and 12". The Ian Pooley version of "The Ghetto" was unfortunately edited to 4:52, but all the other versions are full length. The Jose Nuñez mix of "Life" is quite good (and exclusive to this CD I believe).
"My Piano" is a standard funky-house track, with a simple piano riff and some strings in the breaks. Part of the beat was later used in Bob Sinclar's remix of "Saving Mary" by Fused.
