I have to be honest I scoffed at this when I initially sampled the B-Side "The Rain". I thought to myself, Matt took a sounds of the rainforest cd and pressed it. That said, I've been playing the heck out of it ever since. It is in my opinion, intended to enhance the certain mood a person is in when they wake up, or are just about to go to sleep. The energy level that a person reaches at certain points in day to day living where the thought of a kick drum is intolerable. This is not just the sound of rain falling. There are a lot of other subtle, hidden treasure chests woven into the atmosphere. The setting as I perceive it is a third world tropical island in close proximity to an airport runway. Likely the only runway our imaginary island has. A chorus of exotic birds are quite obviously enjoying sunshine when the record begins. As the thunder and downpour approaches the birds are quieted. Suddenly the rain overtakes the scene. The tired old wise man lazily plucking the banjo strings under the thatched roof three bungalos down from your hut retires to his quarters to toke on his pipe and have another slug of rum while the storm passes. Overhead, another jetliner full of this week's obnoxious hawaiian-shirt-toting tourists comes in for a safe landing as the storm reaches it peak. Finally the storm moves away and the last thing felt is the grey bearded old man picking up right where he left off. This record which seemed somewhat shallow on first sample ends up taking me on vacation every time I listen to it. I wish this were 25 minutes and I wish Matt would take the time to create more adventures like this one.
