Notes

Cedar Walton, a keyboard giant in the jazz world, gets quite a workout every time he plays. From Piano to Arp synthesizer to clarinet to electric piano to mini-moog and back again !
Funk, pure jazz and occasional rock... Walton carries his weightwith the best of them, and his explosive style, wich never fails to bring an audience to a frenzy, has bred a veritable cult of Waltonites throughout the world.
On his RCA album debut, "Mobius" (APL1-1009), the versatile Cedar confirmes his abilities as a player, composer, interpreter and arranger. Walton and a corpse of topflight studio people register with Coltrane's "Blue Trane", Thelonious Monk's "Off Minor", and three original pieces, "Soho", "The Maestro" and "Road Island Red".
In addition to Walton's virtuosity, "Mobius" is garnishedwith Ryo Kawasaki's stinging guitar, pristinely clear vocals by Adrienne Albert and Lani Groves, strong, upfront percussion by Ray Mantilla and Omar Clay, and Frank Foster's tenor sax.
Cedar Walton, born in Dallas, Texas, on January 17, 1934, began his professional career in 1959 when he began touring for several years with J.J. Johnson Quintet. He later joined the Art Farmer Benny Golson Jazztet and then Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, such as "Mosaic", "Ugetsu" and "Plexus". Following a two-year stint with Blaket that included two European tours and a visit to Japan, Walton turned his energies toward free-lance work.
While basied in New York City, Cedar played with luminaries as Donald Byrd, Abbey Lincoln, Eddie Harris, Blue Mitchell, Kenny Dorham, Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, Jimmy Heath, Milt Jackson and Art Farmer. After several sessions he became a member of the "house" rhythm section at Prestige Records. Prior to the release of "Mobius", Cedar Walton had recorded five LP's as a leader, "Cedar", "Spectrum", "Soul Cycle", "Breakthrough" and "A Night at Boomer's". For the past 15 years Walton has given vivacity and new life to "america's only true musical artform" jazz, and a tradition of piano playing cultivated by Jelly Roll Morton, Earl Hines, Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk and Art Tatum.
MOBIUS, wich is the theoretical shape of the infinite universe, makes use of the most modern recording techniques and synthesizers. We mastered and mixed so that it's hotter than competition, wich should help radio play and in-store demonstration.
