This was the first Mingus record I ever heard in my life and it changed everything for me. This wonderful recording features the unstoppable Eric Dolphy, Jaki Byard, Clifford Jordan, and Dannie Richmond group Mingus toured Europe with. Unfortunately, Dolphy would die shortly thereafter, leaving a huge gap in music. This recording is worth it even if it's just for the long cut of Good Bye Pork Pie Hat. This is a must have for any jazz aficionado.

There is an insert in that french edition ( size square ) with a text written by André Francis in French and translated in German and English.

Almost all vinyl-editions of this record suffer from poor accuracy of info given on the record sleeve. Actually the title of track A2 - B1 is "So Long Eric (Don't Stay over There too Long)" [Not: "Good Bye Pork Pie Hat"] and there is a lot of misspelling concerning other song-titles. Please see the 2003-CD-issue for better information.
Whereas the CD indeed documents only the one concert at Olympia-Paris (without Johnny Coles), the earlier vinyl-editions of the 70ties offered an alternate take of "So Long Eric", which was recorded one day earlier, with Johnny Coles still playing the trumpet, before he collapsed on stage and had to be taken to the hospital.
The introduction [Track A1] is the one of concert two, and the missing Johnny Coles is mentioned, when Mr. Mingus refers to Johnny Coles' trumpet, placed on stage lying on a chair (which can be seen on one of the pictures shown on cover).
