Reviews & Discussion

Colourbox (sometimes Colour Box) offered some of the most confusing stuff in pop-history. As the official banner says here, they were quite a mix of odd stuff - at times too pop, while on the other hand just as fundamental. The group recorded merely a couple of albums, among which none can be told apart - each wearing the name 'Colourbox', the first released as Mini-LP with a provocative Horses-cover, the other one in a colourful Chinese-girls' wrapping.

A significant move for them came in a sample-ripping 'Pump Up the Volume' as M/A/R/R/S but here there are far more interesting tunes that will send you to another universe. Most notably 'Philip Glass', an ode to the American modern composer, the piano-piece 'Sleepwalker' as antipods to 'The Official Colourbox World Cup Theme', 'Baby I Love You So' and 'Looks Like We're Shy One Horse/Shoot Out', that it's hard to believe it is all done by the same band.

Although this is as good as 'best ofs' are usually dull hotch-potch, original albums and singles still offer more in terms of sound variety this group generally champions with their own touch of originality - especially mixing in Lorita Grahame's beautiful singing. A truly recommended listening.
