Reviews & Discussion

Review by markjazz Sep 15, 2008
I only listened to this album once when I gave it a rating of 4 and after a second time I'm putting it at a 5. It's some of the best live versions Coltrane as done and this is probably his most known session as well. The album starts off with Spiritual and it's a slow 13 minute number that's fairly good. I much prefer Coltrane's fast paced hard bop style though, which is the next two tracks. Chasin' the Trane rules and it's one of my favorite of his longer tracks. 16 minutes of hard bop'n hip hop'n blues jazz that I'm sure would have had the crowd snapping their fingers and tapping their toes to the beat. The fact that the best track on here is the one that doesn't have Eric Dolphy playing proves how good of an album and session this was.
