Funcrusher Plus is probably THE definitive underground hip-hop album. Company Flow's groundbreaking style and blatant opposal to the mainstream was (and still is) a refreshing change from the manufactured hip-hop acts of pop culture. The production is dense, futuristic and dark, and the lyricism of El-P and Bigg Jus is amazing. It's unfortunate that artists like Company Flow went almost unheard of - albums like this demonstrate the way hip-hop should truly be.

Really influential and light years ahead of most of its contemporary releases, this is phat & phunky, confrontational and politically charged hip hop that'll blow your speakers... and mind if you give it time. The beats are ace and the rhymes balance between competition and straight political depth charges with tremendous versatility to combine both. It has too many classics to mention, but just listen to "Population Control", "Krazy Kings", "Vital Nerve" or "The Fire In Which You Burn" and you'll have an impression of what boiling is. A sure winner

A heavy LP that alienated a lot of headz at the time - me, I love dark music, but this took me four years to get through. Dense isn't the word.
The (then very young) El-P shows maturity beyond his years with this collection of minimalist bass-heavy bumps and sci-fi samples, held together by Bigg Jus's abstract flow.

A hardcore album by a truely hardcore outfit, and one that predates a lot of abstract indie hip hop electronics by years.

B2 Help Wanted and
B3 Population Control
both heavily sample dialogue and music from the extremely bizarre mexican movie "The Holy Mountain" by Alejandro Jodorowsky.
