May well be the best album I have ever heard, certainly Current 93's pinnacle (followed, but not too closely, by Of Ruine or some Blazing Starre), this is an unbelievably epic, perfectly composed album which brings together everything David Tibet was thinking about in the albums before in a much clearer state of mind (i.e. his speed-influenced hallucinations of a giant crucified Noddy had thankfully taken the background). A gnostic examination of the apocalypse, and the notion that Hitler has initiated it as an avatar of Vishnu. Contrary to popular belief, this does not mean that David Tibet worships Hitler, quite the opposite in fact (leave that to Death in June). Tibet rather sees him as a symbol of humanity's "most base", a firm warning from the gods to man. Cashmore's compositions as always are exquisite and Tibet's poetry is as well-written as ever. Star moments include the spacious ballad of A Sadness Song, A Song For Douglas (which is a heartwarming ode to Douglas P.'s (Death in June) obsession with the bygone age of order), and the opus Hitler As Kalki (Tibet's epic explication of the above notion). Unfortunately, the outtakes on disc 2 do not match the original album, but it is always nice to hear Tibet's continual reworking of his material. The best benefit of this reissue is the mix, it is vastly improved over the 1992 release, which was far too quiet and lacked punch (I used to always have to turn my speakers up for this album, still pieces of the mix would be muffled.)

This is one of my favorite albums of all time. The terms "ambient" and "industrial," however, are probably misleading. The only connection to so-called industrial music is the work a lot of these artists produced much earlier in their careers—David Tibet was part of 23 Skidoo, Psychic TV, and Whitehouse, and Steven Stapleton is the man behind Nurse With Wound. What I love about Current 93, though, is how different each one of their albums is from any of their others. "Thunder Perfect Mind" combines old English ballads, folk music, apocalyptic musings, biblical references, and odd literary influences to create a unique and beautiful work. It's not like anything else I've ever heard. To be honest, I didn't like it at first, but it grew with me, and now I think it's absolutely brilliant. I'm always hesitant to recommend Current 93, since their music doesn't exactly appeal to everyone, but if you're curious, this album is a good place to start.
