Reviews & Discussion

Rated 5/5
Review by improbeats Dec 24, 2007
Classic Album that deserves to be in every serious music collection. This record was made in an era when soul/RnB was mainly created in a highly formulaic way sequenced and programmed in a very rudimentary way. This Album really reignited the worlds interest in Soul music during the nineties.

There is a high level of musicianship with great performances on Rhodes/Piano and Hammond from D'Angelo as well as inventive vocals. There is a heavy Jazz influence throughout the tracks and the whole album is underpinned by an impeccable sense of groove. Other clever features are the instrumentation in the title track which is filled by the use of vocal samples which create a sense of being within a club/bar atmosphere.

Classic soul album w/ heavy hip hop influences and excellent musicianship. Got it back in '96 and still listen to it and play it at chill dj gigs on a regular basis. With the exception of Maxwell's "Urban Hang Suite," have had a hard time finding modern soul/r&b that carry a timeless and relevent feel in the spirit of Marvin Gaye, Al Green or Curtis Mayfield. Play this stuff for your girl and you will get some.
