Reviews & Discussion

Rated 4/5
Review by OmegaSupreme Mar 24, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
This mix is very much a foretaste of what Promo would do with his r_AW Essential .03 mix. Though that mix is a lot more rougher, launching into industrial-flavoured techno and hardcore a lot sooner than this mix, it is nice to hear Promo mixing some straight-up techno for the first 7-odd tracks before kicking things up a gear with the likes of 'Pallet of Distortion' and 'E-Ville'. The inclusion of 1993's 'Quoth' is a well-placed nod to some of Promo's more obvious musical influences, while it is interesting that, apart from the dissappointing '2 Ure Head' and 'Cyclone', Ophidian is the only non-Third Movement/Hardcore related artist to make an appearance here. Was Promo as fed up with Enzyme as I was at the time of this album's release?

Apart from the aforementioned disappointing inclusion, I will never understand the appeal of ‘Ramon’s Visit’. It’s just a lame track. As is ‘Indirect Bass’. Both are simplistic in their arrangements, and, for 2002 releases, offered nothing new musically. These are the weak spots in an otherwise strong mix. The beginning is an absolutely essential listening experience (Promo throws together some fairly disparate techno that you normally wouldn’t hear in the same set when mixed by techno DJs), while the second half is features some tough-as-nails hardcore, with the likes of The DJ Producer, Manu Le Malin and Ophidian always being a pleasure to listen to.

Though it sounds corny, this one is all about the ‘journey’ – there’s a distinct beginning, middle and end that is only let down by a lame final track that in itself goes nowhere. Apart from that, you should try and track this one down if only to hear what a real DJ can do when they put some thought into their track selection and concentrate on giving the consumer a full listening experience.
