If it's on vinyl it's a bootleg....

From DJ Shadow himself
"Most of you are aware that both mix CD's I did with Cut Chemist, Brainfreeze and Product Placement, were bootlegged (counterfeited) en masse. (When I say 'bootleg,' I'm not referring to the phenomenon in Europe where people take vocals of one song and put them on the music of another song. I don't have a problem with this practice, I just call them 'blends' from the hip-hop days). First of all, if you have a vinyl copy of either Brainfreeze or Product Placement, IT'S A BOOTLEG. We never made vinyl, the mixes were CD only. If you bought the CDs at your local Tower, HMV, or for that matter ANY STORE IN THE WORLD, it's a bootleg. Got that? When you see the CDs in your local store, it ain't real. We gave a few copies to Amoeba records, Stacks, Aron's, and a couple other stores in LA, as well as Groove Merchant in San Francisco, but those are long gone and only account for 50 or so CDs. If you go to Amoeba or Aron's now, you'll see bootlegs. If you bought online at SandboxAutomatic or other such sites, THEY ARE BOOTLEGS (The only exception is the 100 or so copies we sold to hiphopsite.com). Other than these few cases, THE ONLY WAY ORIGINAL COPIES WERE SOLD WAS AT OUR SHOWS. This is how 90% of all Brainfreeze copies were sold. Product Placement is still on sale at DJSHADOW.COM, but we're down to our last 100 or so copies. We made 2,000 Brainfreeze CDs and 6,000 Product Placement CDs. DJ Shadow-Live In Austin is a straight-up bootleg of a show I remember not liking very much. I recently saw another live bootleg and a boot of a Product Placement show we did. So it goes on and on. My main concern here is just informing people as to what's "real" (ie, authentic) and what's not. How you spend your money is up to you, but you deserve to know the facts. If you're unhappy with your purchase at a store, by all means let them know they sold you a bootleg and you want your money back!!"
