This is really the only Danzig album you need to own. After this, Glenn ‘Danzig’ Whitman’s ego really went into overdrive. This album is great though, at times it sounds like Danzig is channelling the spirit of a decaying and cantankerous Elvis Presley. It perfectly captures the interesting aspects of heavy metal without the posturing and cheesy guitar solos. The production by Rick Rubin is unrivalled; the sound quality is so solid and clean throughout that each song flows perfectly into the next without a drop in intensity. The other interesting aspect of this album is the way Danzig’s lyrics convey an atmosphere of morbidity and barely restrained aggression without the use of profanity or gratuitous violence.
