Reviews & Discussion

Rated 4/5

The cries("This is it!" etc.)at the start of 'King Tito's Gloves'are sampled from seminal 1983 New York graffiti documentary 'Style Wars'. The scene is a group of graff writers seeing the result of their night-time efforts appear on the side of a moving train. The illustration on the centre comes from the poster for 70's NY train-hostage thriller 'The Taking of Pelham 123', the soundtrack of which is a beat-head's wet dream. Another Deadly Avenger release is called 'We took Pelham'. Is this guy taking trainspotting too far or what? The music itself is a similarly reverent, spot-the-sample mash up of trip-hop, breaks and house. I seem to remember this stuff being referred to at the time as Small Beat; i.e. kinda like Fatboy Slim only light on the cheese.

King Tito's Gloves is a fantastic blend of disco house and breakbeat with a large dollop of funk thrown in for good measure,an absolutely blistering dancefloor tune. The remaining tunes run a far more downbeat groove.
