The current trend in experimental/ambient styles is to go a more electrocoustic and Modern Classical route. A lot of people are jumping on the bandwagon just like people did in the 90s with techno and big beat. Like 90s techno, though, not many people do this new flavour of music very well. A lot of electroacoustic/Modern Classical-influenced stuff coming out now seems trite and forced, rarely exploring the true acoustic presence and density that makes this genre so amazing, but not this live set by Deaf Center. This is a strong representation as to why Deaf Center can, and should, be regarded right alongside Stars of the Lid, Ontayso, or Max Richter.

If you have yet to hear Deaf Center, this is a brilliant way to start. This really shows off their depth of field, their subtlety, and their amazing usage of differing reverberant spaces to achieve a truly dense and foreboding acoustic composition. This set mixes a great selection of tracks (a lot of them found on 'Pale Ravine'), and even introduces some haunting vocal work (7:30+) and ripping reverb/feedback loops (14:00+). The only problem with this set is that it wasn't captured in uncompressed aiff and released as a CD.
