Reviews & Discussion

Review by scoundrel Sep 29, 2008
Dntel’s Jimmy Tamborello has always had one hand with pop melodies and the other with experimental electronics, and we can hear his initial efforts in this regard on _Early Works For Me If It Works For You_. Perhaps indicative of the time period in which these tracks were made (1995-1997), the rhythms skew more towards skittering drum ‘n’ bass, overlaid with a simple, looped melody. "High Horses Theme," on the other hand, wobbles at a slow canter, and "Tybalt 60" has a quasi-martial rhythm. The icy melody of "Termites in the Bathtub" has a haunting quality, while "Winds Let Me Down Again" has a darker edge to it. Sure, several tracks tend to meander ("Fort Instructions,") and some don’t develop much -– but this is an issue Dntel will have addressed by their phenomenal album _Life Is Full of Possibilities_. Right now, this album shows off those possibilities.
