Reviews & Discussion

Review by MentallyMad Jun 30, 2010 (edited about 1 month ago)
This album was definately one of rap's best in 1989. This was one of the more anticipated LP's, and it did more than live up to the hype! I got a sneak peek at a few tracks prior to it's release, and this made the anticipation worse for me. I heard "So Wat Cha Sayin" before the single came out, and I also heard a track with the "Total Kaos" music, but the lyrics from a different track, which I believe was "Get The Bozack". Obviously they changed that track later on. Once the LP finally dropped, EPMD was live on the Marley Marl In Control Rap show that same week in August, and PMD said the LP went gold after only 7 days! He joked about changing the lyrics on "So Wat Cha Sayin" to "7 Days Later, The LP Went Gold...So Wat Cha Sayin!" From beginning to end, I had a problem listening to only two tracks, which was great for a whole LP back then. They were "It's time 2 party" and "You Had Too Much To Drink". I found out later that Sleeping Bag was responsible for adding "It's Time 2 Party", as almost all rap LP's at that time had a hip-house track, and this LP was to be no different. "You Had Too Much To Drink" was funny the first couple of times you heard it, but it got old fast. I'm not surprised Sleeping Bag records folded early in 1990, especially after deciding those TWO tracks needed to be the next single after "The Big Payback". I was dumbfounded when I got that one in the record pool! They picked the worst two tracks from a great LP, when they had the luxury of still having so many other great tracks they could have used for the next single. Imagine having a remix, or even an instrumental for "Knick Knack Patty Wack"!? Or what about "It Wasn't Me It Was The Fame" or "Strictly Snappin' Necks"? It's water under the bridge now, but even Sleeping Bag would not have been able to screw up this LP, It was Great then, and it still is.
