Reviews & Discussion

Am I the only one not to fall down in awe in front of this miserable offering? I LOVE Entheogenic - until this. Starts off brilliantly with Skullcap, pedestrian Trara and Araras, Entheogen Spice is derivative of earlier works, and as for the last three tracks... just jazz. I hate jazz. If I wanted jazz I'd go to the dentist (who insists on playing it). Next Entheogenic will be teaming up with Chick Corea.
Ultra disappointed.

Another Classic release from this fantastic duo - Entheogenic ! have really been enjoying this for a few weeks now... The opening track Skullcap has to be one of my favorite Psy-Downtempo tunes ever !!! very powerful !!! Trara is another solid classic. Followed by Araras which has some amazing acoustics merged with electronics. Entheogen Spice is an interesting piece with lots of acoustic guitars & vocals. Then Microcondian hits us with a wall of sound & emotion.. great deep track this ! Urubus is a psychedelic feast of a thriller with twists & turns & scrumpsous melodies. Vervain is simply stunning - reminds me of a Radio Head intro !!! Fellowship is an interesting Jazzy number.. not your usual Entheogenic song - but good nether the less. Rio Barra is a good lounge number with lots of luscious live instruments etc.. Then the album ends with Itaipava - still have no words for this.. very beautiful song & a great ending to this classic album !

Flight of Fancy Phazeshifting soars into Psydelicspace

very pleased to inform you that the new Entheogenic is out and it rocks!

there was some chitchat on the net about a new sound for this duo of psyberwizards, but i think what has happened is that Helmut Glavar and Piers Oak-Rhind have forged a new musical relationship that is the result of the world travelling that they have done recently and a reassessment of their own work to date.

i can confidently say that this album will silence all criticism that Entheogenic has fallen off from the top of the game. this album proves it. they are better than the recent Twisted releases. their shamanic authenticity is only matched at this point (to my mind) by the Waveform artist, Phuture Primitive.

the previous release, Golden Cup, was experimental in some ways and also the result of their being away from each other for a pretty long time while separately visiting spiritually powerful locations world-wide. on top of this, the album before that, Dialogue Of The Speakers, consisted largely of remixes in which other artists expanded some Entheogenic ideas and Glavar and Oak-Rhind needed time to digest all the wonderful ideas that had spun out from their music on that album.

the album *before that* was Spontaneous Illumination, which is a near-perfect electrodub disc. all these things combined resulted ultimately in Golden Cup being perceived as a less successful release (as so many transitional albums.) and after a while, my assessment was that Golden Cup primarily had the disadvantage of the artists being apart for so long.

On this current album, Flight Of The Urubus, the amount of time and care spent on it shows brilliantly. Our heroic duosages have created a work that can be proudly placed next to DOTS and Spontanteous Illumination.

The signature Entheogenic sound has never been crisper, funkier or more flamboyant. They've incorporated acoustic guitar plus some tasty electric guitar work of their own device. Astutely recognizing how FAR OUT !! the piano work they've incorporated works really well.. the synthesis on this disc is inspired and passionate.

there are moments when the stereo field gets so densely deep with psychoelectronic patterning and the overall mix is so gorgeously sensual that the resulting thrills that course through one's body are nearly erotic!

it's almost like you have your own satchel of spice from the sandworms of Arrakis!

All this technical stuff aside, the tunes are just plain FUN! most would get the most laggard amongst us out of the seat onto the dance floor. the vibe is strong emotional positivity. at the same time, as on other albums, each song is like its own Ayahuasca tryp, zinging us through fantastic realms of innerspace filled with scintillating swathes of multicolored light and wild jungles of floral complexity.

this is the most fun i've had listening to psyambient electrodub in a long time!!

Last installment from Entheogenic. Have these boys taken us up and down or what? While I haven’t heard their first two albums (bowing head in shame) I’ve only seen these praised high and low. Personally, I like Dialogue Of The Speakers but with Golden Cap it seemed there was widespread agreement Entheogenic had lost their touch. Even I had issues with Golden Cap.

The more surprisingly Flight Of The Urubus lands. This doesn’t t sound as if it’s been made by a couple of long lost dinosaurs. This has an edge Golden Cap couldn’t dream of and a sinister vibe the ear pleasing Dialogue never attained for.

Sure, I have my issues with Urubus. No matter how many praisals I hear the vocals in Entheogen Spice are a complete turn off in my book. Vocals is such a tricky matter and it just doesn’t do it for me hearing someone pleading "Entheogenic". I'm sorry. I can't have it.

Luckily, Entheogen Spice’s vocals aside everything else delivers. Even the jazzy Rio Barro makes a home-run. I could easily image this in a couch on the chill-out scene at this summers festivals. Fly me to the moon, baby! Vervain is the master piece, though. This is music for before, during, and after sex. Oh, the climax at ... oh well, from the beginng. Ever heard of dry orgasms?

Alas, Urubus is already much hyped on various websites and these ears can’t oppose the hype. Entheogenic is back with a capital back! Essential chill-out material.

Entheogenic have always drawn split reaction to their music from the scene. Their first two albums Entheogenic and Spontaneous Illumination were critically well received. There are a section that think its all great, they're legendary, etc., and then there are those who think its overproduced, sample driven pulp. Their last album Golden Cap was heavily criticized and in my opinion symbolized the direction the scene was taking two years ago: commerce, laziness, and a lack of direction. This album has been eagerly awaited by everyone to see how the guys from Entheogenic will rebound from that rut.

This release comparatively takes a longer time to sink in. A lot of new and familiar elements can be noticed. The first thing hardcore listeners will notice is no Indian female vocal samples. Which for me is just pure bliss! I love those vocals to bits but it starts getting annoying when all psy-dub producers start using them. Instead the guys sing themselves on a couple of tracks, and I actually liked it. Makes me think why they didn't on the last 2 albums?

Another positive element is the increased use of acoustic instruments in combination with their trademark electronic production. Acoustic, bass and electric guitars help the music to feel very organic and adds a laid back vibe to it. All said this is a very interesting release from Entheogenic. It shows them maturing and taking their production skills to the next level. I wouldn't go as far as saying this is their best work but it definitely hints at a quantum jump in their musical expression.
