When I first started hearing house develop into the instru-'mental'-mental monster it became much more applicable...house was joining the dots to where 23 Skidoo 400 Blows Tackhead 242 Ebb DAF..blah blah left off...it's misson was purposeful...to freak the funk...I loved this record from day one...By today's standards it sounds dated and compared to other dark menacing bleepers...its limited in it's musicality. But hey, it was only 1989 and that was the whole point, it was about something new, raw and emotional...who gave a flying tinkers if you actually could play...What I loved then, as now, is that it reeks of paranoia...it creeps on all fours on both sides...'Saftey Zone' is the preamble to 'Sweet Talk' which sounds like a demented TV movie pervert trying to pick up while 'Lethal Weapon' sounds like her getaway through the woods...You could draw parrallels with Depth Charge...Very thematic, brooding with atmosphere...a bit of a 'had to have been there' to appreciate it now...but never the less...a good slice of early bleep and bass.
