On Outer Space/Inner Space, Burnt Friedman and Uwe Schmidt’s third outing as Flanger, they return to the skittering electro-jazz that marked their first album, Templates. Although “Galak” hearkens back to Midnight Sound with its mellow pseudo-Latin jazz feel, a few of the tracks are more like “The Man Who Fell From Earth,” with lots of clicks and blips. This album seems to blend their previous two together for something different: “It Ain’t Rocket Science” lays the horns over some off-kilter rhythms, while “Hirnflug” gleefully throws in everything including the kitchen sink. For lovers of weirdo electronic jazz, you already know you want this album.
