Funkstörung, on their first full-length APPETITE FOR DISCTRUCTION, continue their crispy-crunchy IDM leanings that marked their early EPs, but with nascent hip-hop leanings that would mark their later work. Certainly an Autechre influence is present, but Funkstörung manage to move beyond their forefathers. You can hear little hints of MCs on the title track and "A8 KM34," while "Sounds Like a Breakrecord" brings the vocals to the fore over some warped metal clattering and scratches. Equally as interesting is the R&B vocals crashing headfirst into IDM: "Think!" is downtempo overtaken by software, while "Red Shirt, White Shoes" is a love song for industrial machinery. For those craving more pure IDM, "Tried Dried Frogs" growls and buzzes with the best of them and "Mind the Gap" quietly haunts the fringes of melody. Quite a step forward for the Funkstörung boys.
