The Walter Gibbons Acetate version runs to 12:21....

"Its a Better Than Good Time" comes in a variety of shapes and sizes! The original LP version was released in 1978 on a Buddah 12" in the US (catalogue number DSC 126) and in the UK as the "A" side of a 3 track EP (catalogue number BDSL 478-12). The length of this mix is 5.58. Its a well produced, richly orchestrated uptempo soul/disco song and is something of an underground / lesser known classic. Produced by Tony McCaulay, this orginal 12" mix was not remixed by Walter Gibbons and is identical to the LP version. The 12" shown above was issued in Canada only in 1979 with the catalogue number DSC 130. Apparently there was to be a "Dancing with Gladys" LP on Buddah (similar to the excellent "Dancing With Melba" LP, also from 1979) but this never materialised. This 12" contains a (rather crudely) edited version of a 14 minute long remix by Walter Gibbons which never got a full release. The 14 minute version was cut as a "Sunshine Sounds" acetate in very limited quanities for DJ only use. The above 12" cuts the 14 minutes down to 6.58 but sounds like it was done in a hurry and with little attention to sound quality! The nice apsect is the way Walter Gibbons strips the track down to just drums, rhodes and vocal then kicks the funky bass in on the chorus. Because of the variable sound quality on the 12" it has never been bootlegged and this has made the original highly sought after by disco fans & rare vinyl collectors. Just to add further mystery there is an unreleased John Morales (of M & M mix fame) re-edit of "It's A Better Than Good Time" (also on Sunshine Sounds acetate) which clocks in at around 7.58!
