Now, onto the review.
The first disc, Hixxy's mix, is pretty similar to Bonkers 9, except now, he's playing the B-sides of the records. Not a bad thing, though. "Jam The Nightclub (Remix)" is an excellent track, quite catchy, but overall it is not Hixxy's best mix when compared to other Bonkers discs.
Now, the second disc is really a new thing: The first song on Bonkers 9 (Crazy Styles) gave you a taste of this, but the first three tracks on Bonkers X each demo this new style: breakbeats. Personally, I think the first three songs are some of the best in this set, as they're ground-breaking for this style. Most are by DJ Ham, who's obviously porting over some of his Kniteforce influences. The rest of the mix has a bunch of great tracks, especially those produced by DJ Fade. If you've heard of "Ishkur's Guide To Electronic Music," then this set will have many familiar songs, as he uses most of these to describe the sound of freeform.
In other words, Sharkey's mix is good.
Scott Brown starts doing, with this set, what would become his "thing." Start of with a bunch of happy (vocal, in this case) anthems, and end with gabber. It becomes pretty familiar, and in my opinion, it works. At least, in the right setting. Usually, I end up turning this set off after Back & Forth (one of Scott Brown's rare collaborations with the more mainstream happy hardcore producers) or turning it on at Back & Forth, since that's the transition track from Happy to Gabber.
Overall, though, both sides contain a number of wonderful tracks. "Art of Fighters - Earthquake" is one of my favorite gabber tunes, and it has some cool sampled vocals which really compliment the track.
Overall, this is probably one of the better Bonkers CDs. Get it.
