Something about those Scandanavians makes them put out some great electronic music, and Illumination's first album, THIS IS ILLUMINATION, is no exception. The opening track, "Perfect Sky," is dark, with filtered vocals that seem to drift in out of the ether. "She Got Soul" is funkier, but still retains some darkness. An underlying sadness seems to permeate these songs, from "Somewhere Out There" to the torch song, "Cry Me a River." "Cookie Raver" throws in an uplifting straight-up techno track to keep things from getting too gloomy. The album closes with some more moody techno, but you know what? Sometimes it's good to be sad, as long as you're still grooving.
