A rather mediocre release from an other wise consistently good label. The title track 'tryin' will no doubt appeal to the Nu Jazz fraternity but doesn't really cut it outside of that particular loop. Bland and monotonous, it is at best, an rather indifferent release that can best be described as a below average swingy filler.
On the flip is the marginally better 'Entertainers', though saved only by the nameless (perhaps through choice)vocalist who brings a much needed focal point to the proceedings. Probably considered to be a gem in the eyes of the fans of the genre, but to those who aren't, it doesn't offer much of anything.
