John Beltran goes full-on Latin house with Americano, leaving behind his earlier Detroit-influenced work. “Caboclo” strums those Spanish guitars like there’s no tomorrow, while “Siesta Key” goes for a downtempo approach. There’s a little Detroit left on tracks like “Lost (Without You)” and “A Better Place”, but the majority of tracks are firmly Ibiza. “Soul Sketching” takes on some light breaks but there’s not quite enough distinction from track to track. Overall, a pleasant album, but it left me wanting more, especially from the man who produced the beautiful Ten Day of Blue.
