The first Kattoo album has become a IDM classic and it takes us through 11 different landscapes + 1 re-visit. Some of them are very majestic and magical in atmospheres, some of them are just down right nasty and dirty. The soundscapes are cinematic and very Beefcake-like in style. The ambience creates some melody in the tracks and there's a good selection of samples used here.
It's not supposed to be a theme album that flows nicely from the beginning to the end, but rather a visit to different places. It shows us that Volker can really make different kinds of music very well.
Well this is really a mixed bag. As an album it doesn't have any flow. Some of the tracks are really good & Place 8 is worth the purchase but there are too many poor tracks to make this album one to listen to all the way through. If you want to make an IDM mix then buy this as there are some good tracks to put in one but if you are looking for a nice album then don't bother. There are 5 really poor tracks & they ruin the album. I skip whenever I play this & the album ends up being hard work rather than enjoyable.
