October 22, 2000 is part of a series of pieces from 2000-2001, based on field recordings from different neighborhoods of New York City. Each piece was constructed entirely from the sounds of the city itself - wandering through a selected area wearing a concealed microphone, continually recording into a crude cassette recorder; these recordings were then chopped up, fed into a sampler, and used as raw material for sound design. October 22, 2000 is composed of sounds recorded in Inwood, the northernmost neighborhood in Manhattan.
