Over a year passed since I hadn't listened to this one, and it comes right back at the good time ! If you're having a shitty day this will pull you back up onto your feet... one advice : pitch it up to the max and you get a harder disco touch that somewhat lacks to the normal pitch play. But the tracks are there, lush bass & synths parts and a brilliant and playful beat programming.
Can't say which tracks are the best for me as every listen brings up a new angle, a moody and versatile personality, preventing any boredom syndrom... but then again, who could expect Vibert to get boring ?
Whoa. I did not think that Luke Vibert could deliver anything quite like this. Fans of the Metro Area/Daniel Wang/Brennan Green sound will probably go ape over Kerrier District, but one thing that stands out about this release are the moody and melancholy keys and synth sounds chosen for several of the cuts. The ones that stand out to me the most are the following:
Illogan - especially in the latter segments, because of the reverbed synth flutes that conjure up echoes of the Rheji Burrell's NY House'n Authority "apartments" EP (NG 25)
Negresco - featuring some warm synth stabs, a quirky violin sample, and some haunting keys lingering in the background.
Wide Vice - updated SOS Band synthetic funk at around 100 bpms.
This LP draws a quite bit from the recent and more distant past of disco, funk, and earlier electronic music, and yet comes out as something that is clearly grounded as music for the future. Perhaps a vocal number could have made it even more well rounded, but it is excellent on its own.
