I don't enjoy this record. There are many things about it I do like - slow, pounding chords that drone out, sparse drums, OK. Each side is actually great for a minute or two at a time, but Alan's vocals (and lyrics) ruin it for me, and each side is at some point ruined. This is music that glorifies anguish, which can be wonderful, but it's not convincing, as if an effort were made to exaggerate, as if this were a declared artistic intention but not coming from anyone's real gut. If it actually is, it's not the type I would find empowering or delicious, but pathetic and annoying, like being overly frustrated at age eight.
