Reviews & Discussion

Rated 5/5

A treat to this day: full of lush instrumentation, easygoing rhythms, and a playful sense of humor that's much cherished. From the swelling strings of "A Grand Love Theme," you know you're in for a treat. The delicate guitar on "Relaxin' With Cherry" sings sweetly, even when backed with some light hip-hop beats. Katrina Mitchell from the Pastels offers vocals for the Indian-tinged "Love Me Sweet," while "The Bootleggers" and "Calling Aventura King" go for more cinematic landscapes. "She's My Lover" goes for swirling psychedlics. My favorite track, "She Woolf Daydreaming," which goes from angelic and blissful to slightly pornographic and then to wistful. "Cosmic Supernatural" is both spiritual and earthy. On the second disc, "La Seduzione" is sexy and languorous, while "Pearly Girly Man" swings and swoons. If "She Woolf Daydreaming" was slighly pornographic, "Cum'on" goes that whole hog. "The Wrong Number" start off dark, but then moves into some harp and bass action.

An outstanding album. Not a weak track in the bunch.

This is exactly what the downtempo world was needing when it came out - a beautiful, cinematic panorama of world music, chilled beats & italian porno soundtracks (no, really!). This 2 cd set has a bonus disc of tracks only available on his hard-to-find singles, and is well worth the extra money. "Love Me Sweet" features Katrina from The Pastels on vocals, and is the only vocalised track here. The rest rely on samples and innovative song passages, something sorely lacking in a genre that all-too-commonly relies on simple loops.

In a word: Stunning.
