A remarkably powerful debut from a unique and groundbreaking band. Jaz Coleman was later quoted to have a few regrets regarding the album's production which he felt may have suppressed the raw power of the band at that time, whilst many fans feel that the production actually adds a new experimental dimension to that live sound. An interesting but litle known fact regarding Mike C's stunning gatefold sleeve artwork is that his awesome black & white collages are based upon legendary war photographer Don McCullin's early 1970's photographs of conflict between youths and state forces in Northern Ireland. (See McCullin's 2001 career retrospective for the original photographs)

The US version of Killing Joke's debut LP is notable for two variations from the UK release. Firstly, the US release adds 'Change' which was originally the b-side to the 'Requiem' single. Secondly, the UK release has a gatefold sleeve rather than the standard sleeve found on the US release.
