Despite the nostalgic praise heaped on their debut, 'Advance' is the duo's finest hour, a subtle update on the beats n' bleeps of Warp's Artificial Intelligence concept.
Brash, bold, brave and beautiful, 'Advance' is timeless in its own mid-90s kinda way. 40 years ago, this is probably what people thought pop music of the future would sound like.
As both, Bell and Varley shifted towards solo projects and studio production in the mid-90s, 'Frequencies' and 'Advance' remain with other precious jewels of perfect electronic dance-music. Unlike house-influenced 'Frequencies', 'Advance' continues with more ambiental spaces, but to keep up the atmosphere, it is spiced alright with bombastic 'Tied Up', 'Shut Down' or 'Kombat Drinking', enough to get down the dancefloor for a start. Simply, this is the right measure, the perfect beat, a true masterpiece. Sadly most people will miss it. And most sadly, they will miss it in favour of some cheapest dance-trends. Whatever happened to revolutions?
