Lamb continues to grow up. On their fourth album, BETWEEN DARKNESS AND WONDER, their track take on a much more orchestral bent, less dependent on rhythm than before. There's something majestic about their tracks: "Darkness" sweeps across the room on its strings, augmented by some IDM-flavored processing. "Stronger" is fragile, aided and abetted, as always, by Louise Rhodes' brittle vocals. A snippet of Debussy's Clair de Lune makes its way into the aptly titled "Angelica," a sweet and dreamy track. "Till the Clouds Clear" starts out stripped down to just a few musical elements, but by the chorus, an accumulation of sounds washes over the track. "Wonder" returns to the orchestral grandeur, layering Rhodes' vocals with strings and a harp. Wondrous indeed! There's an increased sense of delicacy to the compositions, but that doesn't mean they're any less engaging: "Please" mixes treacle and rhythm; "Hearts and Flowers" highlights the emotional content of the album without resorting to obvious heart-tugging. Quietly beautiful and powerful.
