Cool and shimmering technoscapes from Lawrence on his album THE ABSENCE OF BLIGHT. Though much more rhythm-oriented than some of his earlier work, the emphasis still remains on the overarching atmosphere. So the tinkling sounds on "Shelter" are grounded by the bass as the track develops, and the moodiness of "-" is unabated by the beat. "Lost Friday" has a cheery melancholy punctuated by a slow build and a chorale effect underlining the track. Though the overall mellowness of the album may be at times soporific, the low tones on "Neighbothood" will pull you from your sleep. A complex and engaging album, at once abstract and compelling, especially the arch and archaic ending track, "Somebody Hold Me." Recommended.
