Reviews & Discussion

Review by tcordes Sep 22, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
Appelsap was a breath of fresh air in 2000. It still is today. Hard to compare with other artists, the closest match would probably be Mouse on Mars (try Iaora). The "hits" on this CD are alone worth the price of admission. They should tickle any IDM'ers neurons. The "misses" are still interesting and not at all annoying.

The stellar tracks that you simply must hear at least once: 5 7 11 13 16 17. Wow!

tHALidomide is exactly right. This album is a stunning gem, and doesn't seem to get anywhere near the recognition it deserves.

Merck as a whole is a pretty poor label in my opinion, but they did the right thing releasing Appelsap. Available for a while as a demoscene release (some of the best IDM ever, like Mellow-D, has come out of the Scandinavian demoscene), Merck finally released it as a CD. It's short - thirty-odd minutes (not counting remixes) - but it is glorious. Shimmering, emotional, groovy, and - get this - non-derivative. It's not an Aphex, Autechre, Squarepusher, BOC, Paradinas, anything ripoff. There are influences in his music, but it's original.

And it's great.
