MJ Cole's debut album, _Sincere_, brought a level of musicality that lifted it among its garage compatriots, and his second album, _Cut to the Chase_ raises the stakes even further by taking on different genres. Jill Scott brings her considerable vocals to "Perfect Pitch," a funky workout, while Vula heads straight for the dancefloor with "Wondering Why," a spry little house number. The uptempo "Honesty" gets across a more thoughtful mood without sacrificing too much danceability. The spoken word tracks "Live My Life" and "Take Flight" also benefit from Cole's light touch, but the smooth R&B of "Ghetto Queen" and "Lost Our Way" show his more sensitive side. But it's the hidden track, "What You Give," that stands out most, blending the soul and garage the most seamlessly. MJ Cole not only cuts to the chase, but he also cuts through the competition.
