Madonna - Bedtime Story

These remixes are a perfect example of why you should never have just one DJ remix your song. "Bedtime Story", one of my favorite Madonna songs of all time somehow fell almost entirely on the mixing board of Junior Vasquez. Junior's mix of jungle-drum rhythms and absurd synth chords just do not lend well to pop music. In Junior's mind, everything should be remixed in his style to play over and over again at mindless white parties and Ibiza club nights.

If you want to hear the worst of Junior Vasquez look no further than these remixes. I still wish they would have extended the original version and left it at that.

I remember when the video of this came out and it still fascinates me to this day. I could not wait for the remixes to come out. When I bought the CD, my ears were treated to an absolute train wreck.

All remixes but one had been left with Junior Vasquez's jungle drum, white party burnout signature which is the polar opposite of the mesmerizing vocals. Oh how I wish they had just extended the original version.

A Madonna classic ruined forever.

IMHO this is one of Madonna's more ethereal and honest tracks, even if it was written by Bjork. I personally don't think Madonna could write a song as good as Bedtime Story.
The tracks are mainly Junior Vasquez remixes, all very club house/ pop re-workings. Then, there is the Orbital Remix. This song could possibly the best reason to obtain this cd. It totally stands out from the rest of the tracks, and is probably the best one.
The Survival song is another Madonna B-side, and is unremarkable. I rate it 2/5, a little begrudgingly, save the Orbital remix.

I think this is one of the best tracks of "Bedtime Stories" although it was not very well received. The original version is haunting: it's a slice of deep, dark, downtempo House with apocalyptic lyrics. I remember the video for this track was also very nice. It's a different thing when track #2 hits the speakers. Junior Vasquez is offering us of his worst remix ever. That captivating dark flavour is gone, replaced by a bad Eurohouse line. The vocals sounds definitely out of place. The "Dreamy Drum Dub" uses the same elements with less vox. Orbital are using approximately the same melodic line, but their mix is better, keeping some of the deep feel of the original. Finally, the Sound Factory mix brings us back Junior Vasquez in a much better rendition of the song (fortunately). If I clearly remember, this single marks the last collaboration between Madonna and Vasquez. The rest is fascinating club history: "If Madonna Calls" and Danny Tenaglia remixing "Human Nature". Do I need to say more?
